Somatic Movement to Relax, Release, and Restore
with Bethany Peabody
at the beWell Arts Festival OCTOBER 2025
We often feel disconnected from our bodies as we engage in the busyness of daily stress and responsibilities. Yet, deep within us lies a powerful tool for healing and health — somatic movement. By slowing down and listening into the inner wisdom of our bodies through somatic movement, we can unlock a world of lasting mind-body benefits.
Tap into the inner wisdom of your body: Somatic movement enhances mind-body awareness through intentional movement. It encourages the exploration of movement patterns, sensations, and emotions in a slow, gentle, purposeful manner, often integrating yoga, stretching, breathing, visualization, and mindfulness to help build a deeper connection to the body.
The Super Power of Somatic movement is its ability to help relieve stress and anxiety as the body often carries the weight of worries and fears within it. This can lead to physical pain and emotional unrest. Somatic movement offers a gentle way to destress and release tension, allowing enhanced mobility. It can also helps uncover and release buried emotions or traumas stored in the body by allowing the opportunity to acknowledge and letting go of painful emotions to create space for growth and the freedom to live more fully.
Enjoy a "taste" of Bethany's unique yoga style in free community sessions both Saturday and Sunday at the beWell Arts event.
* To get you started, Bethany offers this somatic neck stretch to release tension. Remember to take it slowly and mindfully: Sitting comfortably, tuck your chin to your chest, relaxing into the stretch slowly while you take deep breaths. Then, release your chin and tilt your head to one side (to bring your ear to your shoulder without forcing it), relaxing into the stretch. Tilt your head to the opposite side to balance out your neck. Repeat as needed. Another lovely practice to feel calm and stretch your lower back and spine is a reclined knee to chest pose: Begin by lying on your back. Draw both knees into your chest and straighten one leg out in front. Keep the other leg hugged into your chest. Switch sides when ready. Daily somatic stretches like these will greatly improve your entire well-being.
